How to use résumé keywords
Paste the job description
Copy the whole posting, from the title down to the requirements. Add the job title if it isn’t in the text.
Read the groups
Must-haves, tools, domain terms, nice-to-haves and what the job does, each in the posting’s own words.
Match them to your résumé
For every term you can honestly back up, use the posting’s exact phrase once in your skills and once in a bullet that proves it.
Check the result
Run your updated résumé through the free ATS checker to see your score and anything still missing.
The goal isn’t to match every word. It’s to make sure the experience you really have is said in the words they search for. When you’re ready, the free ATS résumé checker scores your résumé against the same posting, or let Applause tailor your résumé to the job from your profile.
Questions
What are résumé keywords?
The words a recruiter types into their applicant tracking system to find people: skills, tools, job titles and domain terms. They come straight from the job description.
Should I use the exact words from the posting?
Yes, where they are true for you. A person knows “ran experiments” means A/B testing. A keyword filter often doesn’t. Use their phrase once, then prove it in a bullet.
How many times should a keyword appear?
Once or twice is plenty. Repeating a term again and again reads as stuffing to a recruiter, and our ATS score takes points off for it.
What if I don’t have a must-have?
Leave it out. Don’t add skills you can’t back up in an interview. Lead with the must-haves you do meet, or decide the job isn’t worth the hour.
Is the keyword finder free?
Yes. No account and no card.
