Résumé tailoring · fit before you apply
Tailor your résumé to any job description. Honestly.
Know whether a job is worth your time before you spend an hour on it. Then get a résumé written for that posting, only from what you’ve really done, with every line checked and an ATS score that tells you exactly what to fix.
The checker needs no account. Tailoring needs a free one.
Step one
It reads the posting first
Before writing a word, Applause reads the job description the way a recruiter searching their ATS would. It pulls out three kinds of terms, in the posting’s own words.
- Must-havesThe requirements they will screen on. “5+ years in product”, “payments experience”.
- ToolsThe software and methods they name. SQL, Looker, A/B testing.
- Domain termsThe words of their world. Fintech, merchant onboarding, payouts.
Want to see this on a posting right now? The résumé keyword finder does exactly this step, free.
Fit before you apply
Is it worth it? You find out first.
Tailoring takes time, even with help. So Applause shows your fit before it writes anything: a match score, the must-haves you meet, your gaps, and the years you have against the years they ask for. You see it in Discover, on the job and in the Chrome side panel, right on the posting.
A strong fit? Write the application. A long shot? Skip it, or tell Clappy, the assistant in the side panel, about experience your profile is missing. Every real answer joins your profile and can lift your match.
Honest AI
Written only from your profile
Most AI résumé tools will happily write that you led a team of 25. Applause writes only from your profile: your résumé, your LinkedIn export and anything you’ve added since. It puts the posting’s words where your experience backs them up, builds a Core Skills block from the posting’s own phrases, and matches your headline to the role without ever going above your real level.
Claim check
Every line, checked against your profile
After the draft is written, a second pass reads every line back against your profile and marks it.
- Covered“Cut merchant onboarding from 9 days to 2” Straight from your profile.
- Stretch“Owned the company’s pricing strategy” Your profile says you contributed to it.
- Not in your profile“Managed a team of 25” Your profile says 14.
Fix a flag in the next version, or confirm it’s true and add it to your profile. When every line checks out, you’ll see it in green before you send.
Before and after
One bullet, tailored
Here’s a real kind of edit. The posting asks for payments, product strategy, a roadmap and A/B testing. The profile has all four. The old bullet just didn’t say so.
Before
Led product for the payments team and worked on various growth projects.
After
Led payments product strategy for a 14-person team, shipping a roadmap that cut merchant onboarding from 9 days to 2, validated through A/B testing.
Example · Nimbus Pay, sample profile
Nothing new was claimed. The numbers were already in the profile. They just moved to where a recruiter, and a keyword filter, will find them.
ATS score
A score with the exact fixes
Every tailored résumé gets a 0 to 100 ATS score. It’s our estimate of what keyword-ranking systems have in common, not a promise about any one vendor. Each part comes with the edit that would raise it.
- The posting’s words40 points. Must-haves count double. Said in other words gets half.
- Placement15 points. In Core Skills and proven in a bullet.
- Job title15 points. Your headline against their title.
- Years10 points. Stated plainly, the way they ask.
- Structure20 points. One column, standard headings, real text.
- StuffingPoints off. More than three repeats, or Core Skills over 14.
That last one matters. Stuffing keywords lowers the score, so a résumé tailored with Applause never reads like a list. One tap asks the next version to fix what the score found.
The whole application
Cover letter and screening answers, written together
One posting, one click, one kit. The résumé, a cover letter that opens with why this role, and answers to the screening questions captured from the posting or the side panel. All three come from the same profile and go through the same claim check, so your story holds together.
Download
PDF and Word, ready to send
Download a PDF or a Word file. Both are ATS-safe: one column, standard headings, real text a parser can read. Files are named First-Last-Resume-Company, the way recruiters expect. Then track the application from Saved to Hired in the job application tracker.

Questions
What does it mean to tailor a résumé to a job description?
It means rewriting your résumé for one posting: leading with the experience that job asks for, and using the posting’s own words where your experience backs them up. Same career, different emphasis.
Will Applause add skills I don’t have?
No. Drafts are written only from your profile. A second pass reads every line back against it and flags anything it can’t support as a stretch or not in your profile. If it’s true, add it to your profile. If not, it goes.
Will a tailored résumé get me past the ATS?
Nobody can promise a ranking, and we won’t. Applause scores each résumé on what those systems have in common: the posting’s words, where they appear, your title, your years and a structure a parser reads. Then it tells you what to fix.
Why did my ATS score go down when I added keywords?
Because repeating a term more than three times, or packing Core Skills past 14 items, reads as stuffing. The score takes points off for it. Twice is plenty.
How many résumés can I tailor for free?
3 tailored résumés and 10 cover letters or answer sets a month on the free plan. Add your own Anthropic key in Settings and drafting has no monthly cap.
Can I try it without an account?
Yes. The free ATS résumé checker scores your current résumé against any job and lists the missing words. No account, no card.
